The Duromina Cooperative was formed through funding provided by a
Technoserve project that created incredible infrastructure for coffee production in Agaro, Ethiopia. Prior to this, there was no specialty coffee supply chain in Agaro, and the potential for incredible quality was left unfulfilled as producers sold their coffee for low commodity prices and produced low quality coffee. These investments in infrastructure, information around the creation of cooperative business structures, as well as training in harvest and processing practices that create high quality lots, created a new context for coffee and has yielded many economic opportunities for these farmers. As a result, we see delicate flavors of citrus, floral notes, lots of sweetness, and a delicate body in these coffees.
This ongoing success of the Duromina cooperative demonstrates clearly the incredible impact that these sorts of investments, in the form of economic aid, can hold. In creating incentives and infrastructure for quality, systems of organization that benefit farmers, and education around best practices, coffee in Jimma has transformed and we are all able to reap the benefits of these improvements.
